Grade 11 student Joaquin dos Ramos recently took part in the Round Square International Service Project in Vryburg, South Africa, hosted at the historic Tiger Kloof School.
During the two-week experience, Joaquin lived in dorms without access to a phone, which allowed him and his peers to build genuine connections with one another. He met remarkable people, some of whom he continues to stay in touch with, and worked alongside a team led by the inspiring Mlandisi. Their efforts included helping to build a small school, gardens, benches, and even a rabbit cage.
Beyond the service work, Joaquin immersed himself in local traditions—learning dances such as the gumboot dance, playing instruments like the marimba, and experiencing South Africa’s rich culture. Reflecting on the trip, Joaquin shared that the combination of hard work, laughter, and leadership moments helped him grow as a person. Being unplugged from technology made him feel more energised and present, reminding him how meaningful life becomes when we step away and truly engage.
