A Week of Learning, Exploration and Connection
A group of our College students recently travelled to Lüderitz for the Round Square Environmental Exchange—an unforgettable week of learning, exploration, and connection.
Hosted by Lüderitz Blue School, the experience brought together students across grades as they began building a meaningful partnership grounded in shared values and environmental responsibility. Set against the striking coastal landscape, the programme offered a rich blend of environmental learning and cultural exchange.
Immersed in Nature and Discovery
From watersports and kelp farm visits to exploring local history, wildlife encounters, and even stargazing along the coastline, each day presented new opportunities for discovery. Students were immersed in experiences that not only deepened their understanding of the natural world, but also encouraged them to reflect on their role within it.
Stepping Out of Comfort Zones
For many, the exchange was as much about personal growth as it was about environmental awareness.
Carlene Gertze (Grade 10) reflected on stepping out of her comfort zone:
“It taught me I can be an outdoorsy person.”
She described the final evening braai as a highlight:
“Everyone bonded and got out of their comfort zone.”
Carlene also noted how the experience broadened her perspective:
“This experience broadened my view of different cultures and increased my teamwork skills.”
Despite the physical challenges—“walking in the hot sun”—she found joy in the water activities and left with a deeper awareness of environmental issues:
“Many animals are going extinct and we should think twice about what we do to the environment, as we do not know the consequences.”
Reflection and Awareness
Tristan Norton (Grade 9) found the experience equally impactful in different ways. While humorously noting,
“It taught me that I don’t like kelp,”
he highlighted meaningful moments such as learning about penguins:
“I wish and hope that their future may be better than things are now.”
Tristan was particularly inspired by the collaborative spirit of the group:
“It helped me realise that when people come together they can find very innovative solutions to problems.”
A highlight for him was the boat trip, where students encountered dolphins, seals, and penguins in their natural habitat. Despite the challenge of feeling unwell at one point, Tristan described the exchange as:
“A fun and valuable experience which can teach you many useful things.”
He concluded with a powerful takeaway:
“It has inspired me to be more conscious about my actions, as sometimes they can have a negative effect on the environment in ways you wouldn’t expect.”
Lasting Impact
Experiences like these embody the spirit of Round Square—developing internationally minded young people who are committed to service, sustainability, and leadership. The exchange not only strengthened students’ environmental awareness but also fostered friendships and connections that will endure far beyond the week.
With Gratitude
Our sincere thanks go to the wonderful teachers who accompanied and supported the students throughout this journey, helping to make it such a meaningful and memorable experience.
