A Journey Beyond Borders: Carlene Gertze’s Exchange Experience in Germany

An Opportunity of a Lifetime

Carlene Gertze, a Grade 10 learner at St George’s Diocesan School, was given the wonderful opportunity to take part in a Round Square exchange programme to Marburg, Germany. During her exchange, she attended Steinmühle School, where she was warmly welcomed from the moment she arrived. The teachers went out of their way to ensure that her experience was both enjoyable and memorable, making her feel comfortable in a new and unfamiliar environment.

Life at Steinmühle School

At Steinmühle School, Carlene found the students to be funny, friendly, and extremely curious about her background. Many of them asked questions about where she came from and what life was like back home, which made cultural exchange a daily and meaningful experience. One of Carlene’s favourite aspects of the school was its impressive cafeteria. The space was beautifully designed and offered delicious, extravagant meals that she looked forward to every day.

A Home Away from Home

Carlene stayed with a host family that was exceptionally kind and welcoming. They made her feel like part of their family and took great care in showing her around Marburg. Her tour of the city included visits to two of its most historically significant landmarks: St Elizabeth’s Church and Marburg Castle. These iconic sites are not only architecturally striking but also hold deep cultural importance within the region.

Exploring Germany and Making Memories

During her stay, Carlene enjoyed a wide variety of activities with her host family. These included ice skating, skiing, attending a circus, visiting a water park, and taking scenic walks to beautiful viewpoints around the city. She also treasured the quieter moments spent playing board games together, which helped her feel truly at home. One of her personal highlights was visiting the Christmas night markets, where the glowing lights and incredible food created an unforgettable festive atmosphere.

A Magical Surprise: Venice, Italy

One particularly special surprise during Carlene’s exchange was a trip to Venice, Italy. Exploring the city by boat and travelling along its famous canals was a magical experience that she describes as something she will never forget.

Lasting Friendships and Gratitude

Overall, Carlene describes her exchange experience as exceptional. She created lasting memories, immersed herself in a new culture, and formed a strong bond with Sophie, her exchange partner. The experience broadened her horizons and gave her friendships and experiences she will always cherish. Carlene would like to extend her sincere thanks to St George’s Diocesan School for running such a special programme that allows learners to grow and learn beyond the classroom. She also expresses special appreciation to Ms Milz for arranging all the required documentation and handling the many arrangements that made this incredible opportunity possible.
