A St George’s student recently took part in a transformative Round Square exchange programme in Germany. The experience taught him patience, encouraged him to embrace cultural differences, and deepened his appreciation for environmental care.

Building Confidence and Independence

A character trait that Tanav learned from the exchange was being okay with stepping out of his comfort zone.

“It showed me that I can actually handle stepping out of my comfort zone, Learning to ski was a massive challenge, but it taught me to be patient and confident. It also proved to me that I can be way more independent when I'm away from home.”

Exploring the German Views

Trying out activities throughout Germany became Tanav’s biggest highlight.

“Standing at the top of the Zugspitze mountain completely blew me away, and seeing Neuschwanstein Castle in real life felt surreal. An activity l enjoyed was learning to ski for the first time in the Austrian Alps. Skiing was challenging at first but exciting.”

Embracing Cultural Differences

Despite the culture shocks Tanav experienced, he observed that traditions exist to keep communities together.

“The biggest challenge for me was the cultural differences. For example, there was no school uniform and the school there was less strict and, public transportation was free for students in Germany. Going to the "Maibaum" festival showed me how proud people are of their culture. It made me realize how much traditions matter for bringing a community together. Also, going to Steinmühle School showed me how school operated and how different it is to St.Georges. ”

Environmental Appreciation

Tanav’s exchange made him more aware of environmental care and sustainability.

“In Germany, environmental care is a massive part of daily school and community life, seen through strict recycling habits like the bottle deposit system and a strong emphasis on reducing waste. Living in a country so focused on sustainability made me much more aware of how important protecting the environment really is.”

A Message to Future Round Square Participants

For students considering a Round Square exchange, Tanav shares this advice:

“RoundSquare activities help you build on your teamwork and social skills. You get to meet new people and learn about different cultures throughout the journey. Through RoundSquare I've made memories I would have never expected.”

Tanav’s experience reflects the diverse life opportunities Round Square offers, encouraging students to step out of their comfort zones, explore global perspectives, and develop new skills.
